World's Largest Mirror Balls

Ahhh ... the iconic mirror ball that is the center of every great party. Enjoy the reflective beauty that is the world's largest mirror balls.

The Guinness World Record belongs to Frateur Events and their Crystal (or Cristal) Mirrorball which measures 7.35m (24 ft 1.3 in) in diameter. It was made by Raf Frateur for a display at a club called Studio 54 in Antwerp, Belgium in July 2007. This masterpiece contains almost 80,000 small 5x5cm mirrors. It took 3 months to build it. It weighs 200kg (440 lbs).

The previous record holder is an outdoor tourist attraction located on the South Promenade, near the sea, in Blackpool, UK.

The Mirror Ball, officially titled "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?” by the artist Michael Trainor, measuring 20 feet in diameter, has won the prestigious national Lighting Design Award in 2005. The famous Mirror Ball light show incorporates six moving headlights that would normally only be found indoors within nightclub environments and stage shows. Sponsored by Robe Lighting and HSL Productions of Blackburn, the lighting installation can be enjoyed throughout the evening until midnight.

The six ColorSpot 1200 E AT's are mounted on customised 5 metre high posts, with special domes on top to protect them for the weather – being directly exposed to the Irish Sea it can be an extremely hostile environment. The posts were designed and supplied by Blackpool Council's Illuminations engineering department. They are force air cooled to extract the heat of the fixtures form the small space.

The revolving artwork, featuring 46,500 mirrors, is a permanent fixture on the resort's South Promenade.

It is officially called "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" after a 1960s film and has been a public art display since 2002.

Inflicting damage for audio effect and visual ends, MashUp features newly commissioned installations by artists Pedro Reyes and Ted Riederer—plus, an historical array of art and artifacts dating from the 1960s-on by Czech Fluxus “Broken Music” pioneer Milan Knížák, The Art Guys, Christian Marclay and The Plasmatics. Guest Curated by Jade Dellinger, and organized by CAM.

That Crackling Vinyl Sound

While the hunt for the perfect vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses has dominated the summer, the hunt for classic vinyl has also grown increasingly popular. Which raises the question: why do music aficionados scour consignment stores and Salvation Armys to find old, ratty albums? They could get the same thing at HMV without the excruciating search. The answer is simple—it’s all about the music.

Even though CDs are more accessible and can be listened to more frequently than records, the sound quality and the flashback to the band’s original glory days encourages music lovers to roll up their tie-dyed sleeves and dig through the countless Tina Turner and Gloria Estefan albums to find just one classic Beatles record.

I think it’s the crackling sound the needle makes when it hits the groove of the record that sends chills up my spine. The music has more soul and depth to it when you listen to how it was originally packaged. In contrast, the cold, pre-stamped robotic sound of CDs leaves no soul to the music. Even artists today such as Lauryn Hill and k-os are putting in that scratchy sound effect to give their music that authentic vinyl sound.

Also, album covers alone motivate people to buy records. They can be works of art used for decoration rather than mere packaging. Before I saved enough money to buy myself a record player, I used to collect records and put them up on my walls, giving my room a chilled-out vintage vibe.

There is a definite personality, especially with used albums, that just is not present with CDs. It’s the crazy notion that someone was holding that exact Led Zeppelin record 20 or 30 years ago. Classic rock albums are such a unique hand-me-down because you can almost feel another fan’s passion for the music. It further legitimizes the band that you love and gives them a bit of street-cred, if you will, that their music was as relevant 30 years ago as it is today.

Classic albums are, for the lack of a better word, old. They can be passed down from parents to children, allowing for sentimental value to be found in music. Bonding over Led Zeppelin rather than argyle socks is not only more interesting but more rewarding as well. While my dad never had anything remotely cool to hand down to me, he did give me a mint condition copy of Abba Gold. That certainly made me understand him a bit more, to say the least.

You know that music is doing its job when you feel the room change while you’re listening to a particular song. You just can’t get another fan’s love for the band or such sentimental value from mass-produced CDs. In the end, it is all about the music. In fact, I challenge you to find anything better than spinning Rubber Soul and hearing that crackling vinyl sound as you let the music take you back to the 60s.

Do You Remember Your First Download?

I don't.

But I do remember the very first LP and 12" single I bought (I can't recall the first 7" vinyl I bought).

That's his vinyl answer

There's a poster on the door of the Vinyl Factory that says "Nobody remembers their first download". It sums up the mindset of the people working in this building in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville where vinyl records are made.

For managing director Andy Cuddihy, an engineer and avid vinyl collector, MP3s and digital downloads are inferior. Ugly, even.

Whereas vinyl is a beautiful thing - in both sound, looks, and spirit.

"The thing about vinyl is that my records go back to the first one I ever bought, actually it was bought for me, and it was the Thunderbirds on vinyl. It sounds terrible now. But I can tell you where that scratch came from. It was my sister, where she hit the turntable, and it's part of the story of the record. I can't see much of a story in an MP3."

Cuddihy believes there's going to be a whole generation of music lost because of the disposable nature of downloaded music.

So combining his passion for vinyl and his engineering background he established the Australian Vinyl Factory in early 2006 following the purchase of two of EMI's Type 1400 automatic presses designed by Roy Matthews, who was EMI's engineering and production director in the 60s and 70s.

The presses were designed to cope with the increased production of records that came about because of the popularity of bands like the Beatles.

Cuddihy knew very little about how a record was produced but has continued to work with Matthews ("I ring him up every week.") who is the company's group engineering director.

From the time Cuddihy got the presses out of the container to producing the company's first record took three months. That piece of vinyl was I Love It, one of Sydney dance act Sneaky Soundsystem's first singles which went on to be a roaring sucess.

"[The band] rang up and said 'I hear you guys press vinyl', but I didn't tell him we hadn't done a record at that stage," he laughs. "The song went really well for them but it was pretty daunting not to have pressed a job and then have one of the biggest acts in the country come along. But it showed we were on the right track."

Put simply the pressing process starts with the raw PVC (polyvinyl chloride) going from the hopper into the extruder which is heated to around 135 degrees celsius. It is then squirted into a lump the size of a "hockey puck" and the labels placed either side of it. Then the record is pressed, moulded, trimmed, bagged and put into a box.

"So we can make a record without touching it," he says.

It is reasonably costly to get records pressed and the price depends on quantity and colour. The initial outlay is $1080 for cutting and metal work, labels cost around $359 for 1000; and pressing costs $3.60 a record in black.

But Cuddihy reasons: "For people who are looking for something that's not a throwaway product the cost doesn't really come into it for them."

867-5309 .. for a good time

"867-53 oh ni-ee-yine" is the addictive hook from the 1982 pop hit made popular by the band Tommy Tutone (yes, it's a band name and not the name of the singer). It caused a frenzy of prank phones calls to that infamous phone number ... or just an endless amount of curious schoolboys hoping their dreams would get fulfilled when "Jenny" would actually answer the phone and automatically agree to go to bed with them.

Some people took the phone calling to an extreme and have posted lists of every U.S. area code (and some foreign) phone number using 867-5309. Most are bad numbers.

There's the Jenny, Are You There? project, the JennyScan project and there's even an editable wiki in case you want to share your late-night-drinking-wishing-you-could-bone-Jenny-so-I-called-the-silly-phone-number experience over at Wikia.

Here's just a sampling of results from U.S. area codes starting with 2:

201: Rings, standard voice mail.

202: "Cannot be completed as dialed"

203: "The number you have reached is not in service."

204: "Hi you have reached the Lownes(?)" [Girl answered]

205: "The number you have reached has been disconnected."

206: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

207: "Not in service at this time."

208: Mailbox full, name is not understandable.

209: "Hey, this is Jenny and I'm sorry I missed your call, I'm in New York this month and should be back the middle of next month. Go ahead and leave me a message and I'll give you a call as soon as I get back. Still love you all, okay, you know it. Talk to you later, Bye."

210: "Not a working number."

212: Mailbox full. Standard voice mail. NOTE: This one was featured on ebay, but the auction was pulled because Verizon wouldn't let the number get sold.

213: Mailbox full. Name is a sound of a phone hanging up.

214: Rings and rings and rings.

215: "Disconnected."

216: "Not in service."

217: "Disconnected or no longer in service."

218: "Hello. Please leave a message after the tone."

219: "Area code has changed to 574."

224: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

225: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

226: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

228: REALLY loud dial-up modem sound.

229: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

231: "Has been disconnected."

234: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

239: "Not in service at this time."

240: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

248: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

250: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

*251: "Disconnected or is no longer in service."

252: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

253: Dial tone and then hang up.

254: Rings and rings and rings.

256: Busy signal. Tried again and got "Cannot be completed as dialed."

260: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

262: "Not in service."

267: "Not in service."

269: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

270: REALLY loud dial-up modem sound.

276: "Reached a non-working number"

281: REALLY loud dial-up modem sound.

289: "Cannot be completed as dialed."

Check the links above for the rest of the results.

On a side note, here was Tommy Tutone's previous hit, "Angel Say No" (killer track)...

Here's the Claymation version of 867-5309 (Gumby and Mr. Bill were not available?)

By the way... Tommy Heath, the lead singer of the band, became a software engineer when "Jenny" wasn't paying all the bills.
