MONOPOLY: The Beatles Collector’s Edition

USAopoly, the company that puts out all those specialized versions of the classic game Monopoly, has added the Beatles Collector's Edition to their line.

In this version, instead of buying properties, you are purchasing the various Beatles albums. Every one of the Beatles albums are represented on the board, from Please Please Me to Abbey Road.

There's no money in the Beatles' Monopoly world. Everything is purchased with "Love" (as in the song The End, "The love you take is equal to the love you make...at least that's what the product description says).

For tokens, there are various items that relate to Beatles songs, including Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Strawberry Fields Forever or I Am the Walrus.

The designers used both in-house and outside Beatles fans to give the game the best possible flavor. Maggie Matthews, VP of Marketing, said "We consulted with an array of Beatles fans outside the company to create what we hope is the most compelling execution of the game -- while staying within certain parameters that Hasbro requires, such as leaving the four corner squares of the original game board untouched."

See more about the game at the USAopoly website.

A very dear friend of mine sent me this email this evening and would like me to share it with all my readers.

Autism and the 18 wheeler that ran off the road

We are 2 years in. 2 years on Halloween since the Doctor handed me a box of tissues and said "I'm sorry Mrs. Grancarich. Your son has Autism. We can't make you any promises for his future. Early Intervention and therapy is your only hope"... and then we tried to take him trick or treating. I hate Halloween. I always will. It was the day the doctors confirmed what I knew since the day my son was born. Something was very wrong.

I died that day.

I had a newborn baby, a father in law with cancer and a 3 year old son who was like an 18 wheeler that ran off the road and smashed into a million pieces. I can't get a new 18 wheeler, (nor do I want one) I have to take the one I have, put it back together and try somehow to get it to drive down that highway again.

What did I do? I followed all the "crazy" people who said they had kids that were getting better. Kids that were recovering. I didn't know what that meant, but I wanted that too. Before I could do that, I had to sell my house, pack up everything I owned and move to a school district that could give him what he needed.

I learned about Doctors and scientists that said that Autism was more than a brain disorder. It is a multi system breakdown. I changed his diet, I gave him supplements, fish oil, I spent a lot of money that I didn't have. I wanted to believe so badly that he would get better. He started getting better. At first I thought I was crazy, but people started to notice changes in him. Big ones. Too many to list. He started turning his head when you'd call his name, he started sleeping (not well, but a little bit as opposed to the nights when he woke 20 to 30 times. 3 or 4 times waking is certainly better). He started making progress in school, showing interest in his sister. So many things have changed.

The problem is the changes are so slow that sometimes you wonder if they're happening at all. You hurt every day for the boy that you know is in there and every day you try to pull him out. It's exhausting. It is a pain that no parent can understand unless they have a disabled child.

Every day the bus pulls up in front of my house and all the kids get off. They laugh and joke. They ride their bikes and talk. Every day, the little bus pulls up to my house. I take my son off the bus and bring him inside. He's afraid of going outside. He doesn't understand the world. He holds his hands over his ears and screams if someone is mowing a lawn 2 blocks away. I rush him into the house and hope that nobody will ask me how he is doing. I don't want to cry. I hold it in and I bring him inside where he is safe.

He has not slept through the night in his almost 6 years of life. Last week after 6 years of sleep deprivation I had a nervous breakdown. My body shut down. I have not gotten out of bed much for almost a week. I don't feel sorry for myself. I just can't move. I can't talk. It's too hard. I can write and I can think but that's about it. My husband and family have been taking care of my children for almost a week. I have to get up again and I have to keep going.

When he was diagnosed 2 years ago I was afraid he couldn't learn. I was afraid he wouldn't learn. I was afraid he would end up in a group home, that he would never get better. I am still afraid. I am so afraid every day that sometimes I wonder how I can fake a smile and do my job or pretend to be happy.

My children make me so happy. I love them more than life itself. The problem is, before you have children you don't know how much love there is in the world, and once you find out how much there is... it is so scary... because what if you can't fix your kid?

I guess I have to get up again tomorrow and wonder "WHAT IF I CAN HELP HIM? WHAT IF I CAN GIVE HIM A LIFE?"....It would all be worth it if I can give him a life. Sometimes I just don't know if I'll make it.

People always want to say the right thing. They tell me I was chosen, or that God doesn't give more than we can handle. Sometimes I think he does... but I promise, I will get back on my feet again and I will keep going. I guess part of the journey is that we don't know what will happen in the end.

If my husband and I come out of this in once piece, I'm hoping that someone will be kind enough to buy us a drink and celebrate.

I thank God that I am Julian's mom and I thank God that he gave us Sophia. We're 2 years in to this diagnosis. I don't know what will happen tomorrow, but I think tomorrow I will try to get out of bed.

Please post it, please give my email address. Please tell people that if they need help I will help them.

If nobody ever wrote these kinds of things before me, I would have had nowhere to start. I need to help others find a place to start.

With 1 in 94 boys being diagnosed and 1 in 150 children on the spectrum, someone will need me.

Stax SR-007MK2 Open-Back Electrostatic Earspeaker

Don't even dare call these headphones. These are earspeakers baby!! Electrostatic ones no less. If you have never experienced the sound of electrostatic speakers before, you don't know what you are missing. The sound is crystal clear, the warmth is breathtaking, but my favorite part is the sounds becomes multi-dimensional. I've not listened to these earspeakers, but I'm sure they are just out of this world.... if you can afford them. For my budget, I'll stick with the incredible AKG K701's.

STAX SRS-007MK2 Electrostatic Headphone System

SR-007MK2 Open-Back Electrostatic Earspeaker
STAX SR-007 Omega 2 Earspeaker

Powerful Sound with Utmost Delicacy
The rationale is the development of the new SR-007MK2 Earspeaker was to provide deep powerful sound previously unobtainable in Earspeakers. STAX engineers developed a unique new electrode structure. Visible through the outer case, gold plated on the outer edge this new electrode has no holes unlike conventional STAX Earspeakers and thus provides an increases diaphragm vibration area allowing for rich and powerful sound yet retaining all the delicacy STAX is famous for.

Rigid Metal Housing
To maintain clear distortion free sound it is most important that nothing other than the diaphragm should vibrate. Within the STAX SR-007MK2 the sound element is encased in a thick insulated resin case firmly fixed to the rigid body. The results are nothing short of spectacular.

Fully Adjustable Earpads
Utmost comfort for maximum enjoyment of your STAX SR-007MK2 is provided with earpads that are fully adjustable to the shape of your head that are made of genuine sheep skin..

Need a new Turntable Cartridge ... that costs as much as some people's cars?

AIR TIGHT PC-1 SUPREME MC CARTRIDGE 0.4mV

Item Number: AIRTPC1S
Brand/Label/Format: *AIR TIGHT*
Unit Price: $8,999.99
In Stock

The Air Tight PC-1 Supreme offers an astounding inner impedance as low as 1 ohm. To make this possible, on top of the epoch-moking SH-uX, Air Tight employed thicker wires, succeeding in reducing winding number in the coil by as much as 40%.

"As good as the AT PC-1 is, this new, considerbly pricier moving-coil cartridge from Air Tight is substantially better. Like the PC-1, the Supreme is a model of low internal impedance and high energy. Killer good on transients top to bottom, with phenomenal grip and definition in the low bass, it is also exceptionally lifelike in the midband, with even more of the gorgeous density of tone color, high resolution, and superior soundtaging that made the PC-1 one of JV's (Jonathan Valin) mc references. A top contender for best mc." - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound, October 2008 Issue 185, page 92

Further advantages achieved include:
• Expansion of reproduction bandwith
• Extension of dynamic range
• Improvement of transient characteristics
• Bettermnet of phase characteristics (smaller phase shift)

In terms of playback music, expansion of both the bandwidth and dynamic range provides clearer, life-like soundstage presentation, whilst improvement in transient and phanse characteristics makes it possible to seperate ultra heavy bass range and to offer higher resolution in orchestral performance, making it possible to distinguish individual instruments.

The Air Tight PC-1 Supreme steps forward to the perfection of the theses "High Energy Output and Low Impedance." These two inconsistent themes were made successfully compatible thanks to the acclaimed SH-uX core material and the lowest turning number in coil windings.

SH-uX core offering ultra Hi-Bs & ultra Hi-u:
Suprisingly high performance magnetic circuitry composed of the newly developed core realised, in an optimum combination with the maximum reduction in coil windings, an unprecedentedly high-efficiency energy output: 0.4mV output voltage under 1ohm inner resistance.

Semi-line contact stylus:
Microscopic .1mm-square diamond tip featuring 3 x 30um semi-line contact stylus offers a superb trackability with remarkable abatement of tracing distortion.

Boron cantilever:
The step-taper holding structure by duralmin pipe assures tight, stable support of the cantilever made of pure boron.

Thick wire & lead-free solder:
Unusually thick coil wire notably lowers inner loss conjointly with minimisation of coil windings given by the SH-uX core material, and particularly for sonic excellence newly employed is the lead-free silver solder.

PC-1 Supreme Specifications:
Type: Ultra-low impedance MC cartridge
Output Voltage: 0.4mV/1kHz

More Desecrated Vinyl To Make "Art"

TO MANNE SCHULZE, Kamahl's 1969 vinyl LP Dreams Of Love is a thing of beauty. Not for its music as such but for its aesthetic appeal.

In the name of art, Schulze took to Kamahl's records with a band saw, carved them into pieces, and reassembled them into large abstract works. An Olivia Newton-John boxed set received the same treatment, as did the Seekers' Big Hits.

Schulze quickly points out that these are not his own records. His taste runs more to Led Zeppelin, Kraftwerk and the occasional Beethoven symphony. "I didn't touch my own stuff," he says. "Except for some really obscure rubbish that I shouldn't have bought in the first place."

He has long thought LPs would make a spectacular artistic medium but could not bring himself to destroy his own collection. He found the raw material he needed a few years ago when a friend's father died, leaving behind a box of records, mostly classical and crooners.

Apart from an album of Abba songs played by an accordion orchestra, which he saved for its absurdity, he sliced them all into shapes and stuck them onto aluminium backing, forming patterns and geometric shapes.

The largest work in Schulze's Newtown show, Squaring The Circle, is a shiny black square made from hundreds of vinyl fragments. The grooves cast reflections in every direction. Other works use coloured labels and record sleeves. Both Sony BMG and APRA have expressed interest in some of the assemblages on display.

"It's a great way to work once you get the hang of it," Schulze says. "The records are brittle and flexible at the same time. The surfaces change depending on the light."

Once he had exhausted the original box of records, he scoured second-hand stores and begged friends to donate their collections. Though most of his donors had long since abandoned their record players, they still had records hidden away in boxes in attics and garden sheds.

"I know lots of people who don't listen to them any more but they just can't let them go," he says. "And that's what makes them such an interesting curio. There are all these memories attached to them. Even though you can't listen to them any more, the memories and the music are still there."

For Schulze, this project is part of an enduring interest in recycling the work of others. Several years ago he was one of a group who called themselves "daubists", artists who manipulate and add additional images to original works by other artists. Some saw them as vandals but Schulze believes they were salvaging cultural detritus and giving it new life and relevance.

The same goes for these records, he says. "I'm using material which has been discarded to give it an aesthetic overhaul so it can be appreciated again."

Squaring The Circle is at Wilson Street Gallery, Newtown, until November 2.

Fresh spin on record sales wins EBay award

They’re the type of guys you’d expect to see in a store that sells rare vinyl records — young, hip and shaggy music lovers.

But Pat McNally, 25, and Matt Oehmen, 23, don’t work in a conventional record store. The pair sells records through an online store on EBay, and business is good.

So good, in fact, that the owners of Honest Red’s Records were named EBay Canada’s young entrepreneurs of the year.

A year ago, Oehmen came to Ottawa with a truckload of old records and no job. He had been doing online sales for a record store in Halifax, so to make some money, he began auctioning off his records.

His first sale, the Beatles’ Abbey Road, sold for $1,000, and the business grew from there. Now, they’re averaging 100 records per month to buyers around the world.

“It’s actually a lot of work,” said McNally. “We spend a lot of time looking around for records.”

“You have to be willing to just buy a whole stack and hope there’s something good in it,” Oehmen added. “It’s a lot like gambling.”

Their recent award netted the duo $2,000 in prize money, which Oehmen said they will use to augment their stock of 1,500 records and 1,000 45s.

Despite their success – or maybe because of it – they have no plans to open a real store.

“Online is definitely the way to go. You don’t have to pay rent. We store all our stuff in the basement. It’s just way easier,” Oehmen said.
