I just got this CD in the mail today from the label and it's quite interesting. It's a Prince covers album with a nice variety of artists stepping up to do their rendition. Definitely worth checking out if you are a Prince fan. Keep in mind the arrangements differ greatly from the tunes you think you might know. For the most part this is cool, chill, lounge stuff... which is actually right up my alley. It's a nice mix of jazz, acoustic, nu-soul, dub reggae, electro, ambient techno, etc.

While Prince and Michael Jackson's battle for pop supremacy may have once been the subject of debate, anyone (as comedian Chris Rock points out) can tell you these days that Prince has emerged as the clear victor. Easily one of the most influential musicians today, his sex obsessed yet spiritually minded soul can be heard everywhere from pop chart dominators like Outkast and Justin Timberlake to on the edge experimentalists like Jamie Lidell and LCD Soundsystem.
Prince's music has spanned numerous styles and genre barriers. Rock, soul, jazz, and hip-hop are all a part of his repertoire, though he is equally comfortable eschewing classification and treading completely new sonic territory.
In the spirit of Prince's forward thinking experimentalism, Controversy compiles a selection of classic cover versions of his biggest hits provided by a divergent array of talented musicians. "Purple Rain," "Controversy," "When Doves Cry," and "Crazy You" are all present, though their reinterpretations take the compositions into new territory. Contributing artists include soul legend D'Angelo, reggae's latest sensations The Dynamics, rock group Soulwax (masterminds of the popular 2 Many DJs series) and dubstep's wonder-boy Kode 9.
